Hawaii rental accommodations can be easily broken down into five groups:
Hawaii Resorts / Resort Hotels:
Many of the Hawaiian resorts or resort hotels are multi-building complexes with lots of green space and are usually located directly on the beach. You can choose from very luxurious sophisticated (and usually very expensive) to locations that cater to families with children offering many activities to keep everyone entertained. The difference between a resort/resort hotel and a hotel is that they will offer everything an average hotel would offer plus much more. Though every resort differs, you can usually count on that they are directly on the beach with beach chairs and umbrellas, equipment rentals (boogy boards, snorkeling gear, etc.), 1-2 swimming pools with some having poolside bar service, … (read more here)
Hawaii Hotels :
It seems that even with the huge variety of accommodation types available; hotels still seem to be the most common choice. Hotels are usually smaller with fewer facilities than resorts. There may be a swimming pool but as with a resort, there will be no golf course, multi-restaurants or bars available, or a lot of the numerous amenities that come with a resort. Note that if traveling to
Waikiki beach, here you will find the most non-resort hotels and the highest number of boutique hotels. Most hotels are very often a short walk from the beach and generally offer … (read more here)
Hawaiian Bed and Breakfasts:
If you are looking for some genuine Hawaiian Aloha spirit, try staying in one of
Hawaii ’s Bed-and-breakfasts. Here is where you will most often get a more intimate and romantic experience than the usual large and impersonal resort. And an added bonus, your host will have a multitude of information of what to do and where the best places to eat are. B&Bs come in a lot of sizes and types offering different services. They are usually made up of several bedrooms in a home or several cottages or suites scattered around a property. Points to consider when looking at booking a B&B are …. (read more here)
Hawaii Condominiums:
Hawaii started building condominiums at the same pace of hotels, so they are as plentiful and as easy to rent as a hotel. Though condos are privately owned apartments usually part of a high-rise or low-rise complex. You will pick up your key from the condo manager or rental agency and you are set. The main advantage of a condo versus a hotel is that you are on your own with a kitchen, linens, furniture and with more space of a hotel room. What is particularly great is that this works idea for families in saving on dining out and laundry services or for long-stay travellers which is always more of a deal. Some condo associations also offer coupons for savings on food, local activities, and… (read more here)
Hawaii Vacation Home Rentals:
Vacation home rental will usually be a full cottage or house all to yourself to use being great for families or individuals that like their space. They are usually rented on a week or monthly basis, and most of the time you will never see the owner or agent after you have picked up your keys. These vacation rentals will have all the amenities of a condo unit, but are typically free-standing homes. They will usually have some type of kitchen and laundry facilities (though ask about what it comprises when booking), a TV and phone. Because home vacation rentals are usually privately owned they … (read more here).
A room with an “ocean view” – some tips on understanding views
By now you know to expect to pay more for anything that says there is a view of the ocean. But when they say there is a view, how much do you really see? There is a lot of variation in meaning, but we will try to clear it up.
Oceanfront rooms: this is where hotels or condo rentals sit directly over the sand. Being the closest you can get to the ocean with an unblocked view of the beach, these are the premium rooms and the most expensive. And if hearing the ocean waves is your goal, stick to the lower floored rooms.
Oceanview rooms: these rooms do not have to be directly over the sand and could be situated across the street or even quite a distance from the beach looking over roof-tops – but still have a full view of the ocean. Just a note that if you were hoping to be close to the beach, some hotels and resorts do not make a difference between oceanfront and oceanview rooms, so ask. Still, they are wonderful rooms with a premium price.
Partial Oceanview rooms: this one is the hardest one to nail down to a definition. So our recommendation here is to ask a lot of questions. Once in the room you could have a view comparable to a full oceanview or a sliver between two buildings.
City, mountain, or Garden View rooms: these are usually the least expensive rooms of the condo or hotel complex, but not necessarily poor in quality. Again ask lots of questions. City view is the tern usually used when talking about Waikiki hotels, whereas on the other islands, mountain view means looking at the island’s inland mountains, and garden views mean the courtyard or grounds.
